Do You Know? For patients.

Cardiologists and periodontists have studied the connection between gum disease and heart disease together. Their joint consensus found a consistent association between severe gum disease and cardiovascular disease.

What we know

  • Inflamed gums let bacteria enter the bloodstream during everyday activities such as chewing and brushing.

  • Gum disease adds to the body's overall level of inflammation, which plays a part in narrowing of the arteries.

  • The link is an association. It does not prove that gum disease causes heart attacks, and treating gums is not a substitute for heart care.

What to do

  • Treat bleeding gums early.

  • Tell your dentist about heart conditions and blood thinners.

  • Keep up regular cleaning and check-ups.
